Terms of Service

This page explains the terms of service that apply to visitors of Winslow Arsenault. It is the working agreement between you and this publication: what you may do with the reporting we publish, what we expect from you, and where each side stands when something goes wrong. It is not marketing copy.

Read it once before you rely on the site for anything that matters to you. If a clause is unclear, write to us before you act on it — we would rather answer a question than resolve a misunderstanding.

Reading the clauses in full

The ledger above is a map. The full text below is what actually applies, and where a clause contains a condition, the condition is what governs.

Nothing in this document changes how we report. Editorial decisions, sourcing practice, and corrections policy live in Editorial Standards, not here.

Every clause is set on the page first, plainly, before it becomes policy.

Acceptance of terms

By reading this site you accept these terms

These terms of service apply to winslowarsenault.com and to every page reachable from it, including our news archive, section pages, and newsletter sign-up. When you read, browse, link to, or otherwise use the site, you accept the terms as written on the date of your visit.

If you do not accept a clause, the correct response is to stop using the site. Continued reading after a revision is published counts as acceptance of the revised terms. We date every revision at the top of this page so the version you agreed to remains identifiable.

We may revise these terms to reflect changes in the law, our practices, or the tools we use to publish. Material changes are noted on this page with a new effective date. Minor edits — a clarified sentence, a corrected cross-reference — are made without announcement.

Permitted use

What you may read, quote, and share

You may read every page on the site without payment, share a link to any article, and quote from our reporting in line with fair use and normal attribution — naming Winslow Arsenault and, where practical, linking back to the article you drew from.

You may print pages for personal use, save them for reference, and cite them in research, teaching, or commentary. If you want to reproduce a full article, a substantial extract, or any of our photography in a commercial context, write to us first at StacyPhillips@winslowarsenault.com and describe how it will be used.

What is not permitted: scraping the site at a rate that interferes with service for other readers, republishing whole articles without permission, presenting our reporting as your own work, or running automated systems that place unusual load on our servers. Where we detect sustained automated access, we may block the source.

Newsletter and accounts

Your responsibilities when you sign up

Reading the site does not require an account. If you subscribe to the daily edition through Newsletter, you agree to give a working email address, to keep it current, and to use the subscription only for yourself or for the address you registered.

You are responsible for what is sent from an address registered in your name. If you forward the newsletter to a colleague, that is normal use. If a subscription is used to distribute unsolicited bulk mail, we may end it without notice.

You can end a subscription at any time using the unsubscribe link in any issue, or by writing to us. Ending your subscription does not affect any clause of these terms that survives by its nature — copyright, limits of liability, and governing law continue to apply.

Personal information you give us is handled under our Privacy Policy, which explains what we collect and how long we keep it.

Copyright

Copyright in our reporting and photography

The text, photography, layout, and code on this site are owned by Winslow Arsenault or licensed to us, and are protected by copyright. The masthead, wordmark, and the design of our pages are our marks and may not be copied into another publication's identity.

Third-party material — wire copy, agency photography, and quoted sources — remains the property of its owners and is used under licence or under fair-dealing exceptions for reporting. If you believe something on the site infringes your rights, write to StacyPhillips@winslowarsenault.com with the article, the material in question, and the basis of your claim. We review every notice and act where the claim is supported.

Links you create to our articles are welcome. Framing our pages inside your own layout, presenting our headlines as your own feed, or reproducing our images as decorative filler are not permitted without a written licence.

Limits of liability

What this publication does and does not warrant

We report carefully, and we say so plainly when a fact is provisional. Our journalism is still information, not advice. Nothing on the site is a recommendation to buy or sell any security, to take any legal step, or to make a personal decision without independent guidance suited to your situation.

The site is provided as it stands. We aim for continuous availability but cannot promise that every page is reachable at every minute; maintenance, upstream failures, and errors in third-party services are outside our control. Where a page contains a factual error, our practice is to correct it — the process for that sits in Editorial Standards.

Links from our pages to other websites are offered for context. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy, or practices of those sites, and a link does not imply endorsement of everything published there.

To the extent permitted by law, our liability for any claim connected to your use of the site is limited to the amount you have paid us, if any, in the twelve months before the claim arises.

Governing law

Which law applies and how disputes are handled

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that cannot be resolved by correspondence is handled in the state or federal courts sitting in Kings County, New York.

Before any formal step, write to StacyPhillips@winslowarsenault.com and describe the issue. Most disagreements over a subscription, a correction, or a permission request are resolved directly, and the practice costs everyone less than a filing.

If a single clause of these terms is found unenforceable, that clause is severed and the rest of the document stays in force. The headings used above are for navigation only and do not affect the meaning of any clause.

How we apply these terms in practice

Terms read differently when you can see the workflow behind them. These are the four situations visitors write to us about most often, and how each is handled.

Permission requests

Republishing an article or a photograph

Send the article headline, the exact material you want to reproduce, the outlet or purpose, and the audience size. Licensing decisions for text come from the desk that produced the story; photography rights are handled separately because some of our images are licensed from third parties and cannot be re-licensed by us.

Attribution

Quoting us in your own work

Name the publication, name the reporter where one is bylined, and link to the article if your format allows it. A short quote, credited, needs no permission from us.

Corrections

When you spot a factual error

Write with the article headline, the sentence in question, and whatever evidence supports the correction. Editorial review, not these terms, decides the outcome.

Accounts and subscriptions

Changes to a newsletter address

If a colleague takes over a role and needs the daily edition sent to a new address, write from the old address or confirm the change by phone during working hours. We hold the new address under the same terms as the old one, and the Privacy Policy explains what we retain.

Questions visitors send us

Four things readers ask before they quote us, republish us, or write to us about a clause. Each answer is short on purpose.

Do I need an account to read Winslow Arsenault?

No. Every article, section page, and archive entry is readable without registering. The newsletter is the only place where an email address is needed, and that subscription is used to send the edition you asked for.

May I quote a paragraph in a book or report?

Yes, with attribution and a source link. If your quotation amounts to a substantial part of the article, or if the work is sold, write for permission first. The test is whether a reader could substitute your extract for our reporting.

How are revisions to these terms announced?

The effective date at the top of this page changes. For a material change — a new limitation, a shift in governing law, a different contact route — we publish a short note on the site so readers can see what moved.

What is the difference between these terms and the privacy policy?

This page covers how you may use the site and where each side stands if something goes wrong. The Privacy Policy covers what information we collect, why, and how long it is kept. The Cookie Policy explains the storage our pages set in your browser.

If a clause needs clarifying, ask before you act

A short message is usually enough. Tell us which clause, what you intend to do, and the deadline you are working toward. We answer during working hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM.
